Hospice of Michigan is for sure the national front runner when it comes to compassionate, empathetic, not-for-profit caring for those facing their end of life.

As we continue on our journey of helping society better understand the value of hospice, not only for short-term final care of those who are passing on, but as we will share in our film, Hospice Care in America Today, for those who are on a terminal health journey.

This past week, we were able to step into the northern Michigan community of Alpena and bear witness to the care team there of Hospice of Michigan.

We all understand the calling some of us experience early on in life. As a young ten-year-old, Marcie Hillary, watched first-hand how Hospice of Michigan would come and care for her loving grandfather and then years later see her mother become one of Hospice of Michigan’s team members. That little girl grew up to become the Senior Vice President, Community Relations at Hospice of Michigan. Marcie took us to her grandfather and grandmother's gravesites at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Alpena to share with us what was the spark so many years ago that set her on her own path as a leader in the hospice world.

We were invited into the homes of Marguerite McIntyre and Nora Chimner, both previous nurses and life partners. As they shared the care and services that Hospice of Michigan has been able to offer during these complicated, emotional times. From their wonderful view of Lake Huron we gained a much deeper perspective of their journey.

We then met with Marjorie (Gigi) Wangler and her family. Gigi has stolen the hearts of the care team with her infectious smiles and witty humor. She makes sure that the team members of Hospice of Michigan all sit and color a picture before they leave. Her daughter-in-law Cindi has lovingly opened her home to Gigi and truly counts on the services that Hospice of Michigan offers her and Gigi.

While in Alpena we were also able to film with Kathy Lietaert - Volunteer Services Manager, Maggie Michaud - Volunteer, Vickie Fields - Volunteer, and Michelle LaFave MD - Medical Director.
